Back Safety 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Lifting safely begins with learning the correct posture or position for your spine. You never want to lift anything heavy using your back. In areas where lifting objects is a part of the daily job routine a belt must be worn to protect your spine from back injuries.

Safety Belt for Back Safety

Think through the steps for lifting correctly....

  • Start the lift by putting your feet close to the object. Get a firm footing.
  • Center your body over your feet. Keep the load close to you to grip it firmly.
  • Squat bending your knees and hips and tighten your stomach.
  • Keep your back straight or slightly arched. You want your legs to do the lifting, not your back.
  • Keep your head up.
  • Grasp the load securely with your hands, and pull the load close to you.
  • Slowly lift straight up. Rise up using your legs.

Note: Never twist or turn your body while lifting. Keep your upper torso straight, without leaning into the load. The more unbalanced your body is to with the load, the more likely you are to hurt your back when lifting.

Point to Ponder

What is the personal cost to you and your family in loss of wages if you cannot work because of a back related injury?
